About UTBF, USA

A Fellowship for Preservation, Education and Compassionate Action

Established in 1992, United Trungram Buddhist Fellowship (UTBF) is a faith-based organization founded on the Trungram Tradition of preserving and teaching Buddhist philosophy, practices and principles of nonviolence, social justice and mutual understanding.

Organized as an international network of sister organizations, located in the US and throughout Asia, UTBF endeavors to preserve and promote the rich traditions of the Buddhist teachings, with three goals:

  1. Preservation of traditional Buddhist wisdom
  2. Improve quality and access to education in underdeveloped countries such as Trungram International Academy
  3. Relief activities for those in need.

The United Trungram Buddhist Fellowship was founded on the belief that the traditional teachings of the Buddha can bring genuine awareness, happiness and benefit to our modern day lives.

Preserve

Preservation of traditional Buddhist Wisdom

UTBF’s teaching and practice centers are comprised of traditional monastic centers such as the Trungram Monastic Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal, as well as regional practice centers in the US.

The regional practice centers in the US function with the support of volunteers - center members share the responsibility for guiding meditations and practices, giving teachings and answering questions.

UTBF’s regional locations include: Boston, New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Las Vegas.

USA regional practice centers aim to create a favorable atmosphere for participants wishing to make progress on the path through a graduated course in meditation. Each stage has practices in both shamatha and vipashyana meditations.

In addition, US regional practice centers act as the base from which members participate in broader activities within the UTBF network of international organizations, offering financial and on-the-ground support for the growth of our educational initiatives (such as Trungram International Academy in Kathmandu, Nepal) as well as our overseas relief efforts.

Educate

Improve the Quality and Access to Education

UTBF is dedicated to improving both the quality and access to education for children worldwide. Our main efforts have been focussed in the country of Nepal.

Founded in 1996, Trungram International Academy (TIA) (tia.edu.np) is one of UTBF’s great success stories. Based in Kathmandu, Nepal, TIA serves children from kindergarten through 10th grade. It has developed a reputation for academic excellence as well as the manner in which it prepares students to make a positive contribution to others within their society.

UTBF USA has played an integral role in the founding and growth of UTBF over the years: our members have spent days, months and years providing direction and support to the school - both physically and financially. UTBF USA led the master planning process as well as the overall concept design for the campus at its inception.

UTBF USA has had significant supporting involvement over the years - from the home-base regional practice centers in the US - as well as directly at the school itself in Kathmandu. We have come to work and live in Kathmandu from US states as far afield as California, Washington, Illinois, Texas, and New York; all in the effort to help support the health and growth of TIA.

And our support and involvement continues to this day.

Provide

Provide Relief Activities for Those in Need.

UTBF provides relief services through our sister organization, Buddhist Relief Services (BRS). When the earthquake devastated Nepal in 2015, BRS sprung into action raising funds for basic provisions and to support the on-the-ground efforts of rescue workers throughout the affected areas in Nepal.

Our efforts continue to this day whenever we are needed.
